Don't Ignore The Signs That It's Time For A New Air Conditioner

Cooling season in Broken Arrow can put your air conditioner to the test. While many will pass with flying colors, yours may not, leaving you wondering whether it’s time to invest in a new unit. Here are some signs to watch for that will help make your decision a little easier.

  • Increased energy usage. If you find yourself paying more each year for the same degree of comfort, it may be time to upgrade. Today’s models have a higher efficiency rating, allowing for some real savings on your monthly bills.

  • Decreased comfort. One sure sign that it’s time to consider replacement is a noticeable decline in your comfort level. A unit that’s on its way out may lack the ability to cool sufficiently or evenly.

  • High relative humidity. Signs of mold or mildew within your home are a red flag that your air conditioner is not doing its job. Consider investing in a new unit that will control the temperature as well as the humidity.

  • Unusual noises. Any equipment with moving parts will make some noise, but if you notice unusual sounds emitting from the A/C, they may be warning you of trouble ahead. Pay particular attention to grinding or squealing noises, as both signal a need to turn off the unit and call a professional.

  • Frequent, costly repairs. A good rule of thumb is to never pay more than 50 percent of the value of the unit in repairs. Also, keep in mind that even a complete overhaul of an older unit will result in the same low efficiency rating.

  • A decade or more of use. The average life span of an A/C unit is eight to 12 years. If your A/C is approaching 10 years or older, now is the time to upgrade.
